Congratulations to CREST.BD member Dr. Emma Morton, who has just been awarded the 2021-2022 Gerald L. Klerman Young Investigator Award!
This prestigious award is granted each year by Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). It recognizes researchers whose work expands knowledge of the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Selected by DBSA’s Scientific Advisory Board, it is the highest honour that the DBSA gives to members of the scientific community. Dr. Morton was presented with the award at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in New Orleans, May 2022.
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance is the leading United States peer-directed organization for people living with mood disorders. The DBSA aims to improve the lives of people with mood disorders through education, advocacy, support, and research. DBSA facilitates more than 600 online and local peer-led support groups and has over 120 independent affiliated chapters.
The award is named in honour of Dr. Gerald L. Klerman–an educator, researcher, clinician, author, and head of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration from 1977-1980. Dr. Klerman conducted the first clinical trial showing the effectiveness of medication and psychotherapy for preventing depression. He was also one of DBSA’s earliest supporters.
Dr. Morton has previously collaborated with the DBSA to report on the outcomes of their “Supporting Wellness” project. This project aimed to identify what treatment outcomes are important to people living with mood disorders. You can read more about this research publication here.
