Dr. Miklowitz’s research focuses on family environmental factors and family psychoeducational treatment for adult- and childhood-onset bipolar disorder and psychosis-risk syndromes. He has won Young Investigator (1987) and Distinguished Investigator Awards (2001) from NARSAD, the 2008 Monica Fooks Lectureship from Oxford University, the 2010 Gerald Klerman Senior Investigator Award from the Depressive and Bipolar Support Alliance, the 2011 Bipolar Mood Disorder Research Award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, the 2017-18 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP), and the 2020 American College of Psychiatrists’ Mood Disorders Award. Dr. Miklowitz has published over 300 research articles and book chapters on bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and eight books. His book “Bipolar Disorder: A Family-Focused Treatment Approach” (Guilford), won the 1998 Outstanding Research Publication Award from the American Association for Marital and Family Therapy, and is now in its second edition. His book for consumers and family members, the Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide (now in a third edition), is an international best-seller with over 300,000 copies sold. He has been funded by NIMH and by several private foundations since 1989.
