Dr. John-Jose Nunez is a staff psychiatrist and clinical research fellow at the Mood Disorders Centre at The University of British Columbia, and is a staff psychiatrist and fellow at BC Cancer. His research aims to use computational methods like artificial intelligence to help patients with mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression, and patients experiencing both cancer and mental illness.
To best explore computational psychiatry, he pursued his master’s degree in computer science during his psychiatry residency. This provided training in artificial intelligence, including both in machine learning with structured data, and in natural language processing using clinical documents.
His thesis work has led to two high-profile publications in JAMA Network Open and Communications Medicine, which garnered international media coverage. His academic contributions to date include over fifteen publications, multiple oral international conference presentations, and a textbook chapter. His work has been supported by the UBC Institute of Mental Health and the BC Cancer Foundation.
John-Jose makes wine as a hobby, using everything from Australian petit verdot to local cherries. It's a great hobby for researchers as procrastinating is almost always beneficial for the wine :)
